With the NFL Draft now only one week away we take a look at each team’s potential draft philosophy and analyze what players we expect they will be keen to get their hands on, all before our final mock (3 rounds worth) coming out Wednesday of next week!
INDIANAPOLIS - The Colts have a host of needs which, in any other year, may entice them to trade away their number #1 overall to get more picks. However, this is the Andrew Luck year, with more anticipation over Luck than any quarterback since John Elway (also from Stanford), this is a no brainer. 2nd round look to center Peter Konz, DT Kendall Reyes or guard Kevin Zeitler to fill one of a number of holes.
First Pick: #1 Best Fit: Andrew Luck Current Prediction: Andrew Luck
WASHINGTON - Gave up a second rounder and future first round picks just to land RGIII so other needs will have to wait until the 3rd round. They’d love Bobby Massie to be there but more likely to be Mitchell Schwartz or Brandon Mosley. CB’s Brandon Boykin or Trumaine Johnson are alternatives.
First Pick: #2 Best Fit: Richard Griffin III Current Prediction: Richard Griffin III
MINNESOTA - Three big needs in Left Tackle, Defensive Back and Wide Receiver happen to be perched at the top of their board. The only question is which one goes here? After the reach of Ponder last year they may be more conservative this year and save DB and WR for the 2nd and 3rd rounds respectively. Think Janoris Jenkins, Alfonzo Dennard, Harrison Smith or even Dwight Bentley in the 2nd and Mohamed Sanu or Brian Quick in the 3rd.
First Pick: #3 Best Fit: Justin Blackmon Current Prediction: Matt Kalil
CLEVELAND - Their needs don’t match up to the number #4 pick which is why they were desperate to trade up to get RGIII. However now they may be the beneficiary of a team looking for Trent Richardson, Morris Claiborne or even Ryan Tannehill and get even more picks in return (they have pick #22 from Atlanta). Richardson is the cleanest running back prospect in a while and with Peyton Hillis parting ways this looks the likely choice. OT Cordy Glenn, CB Stephon Gilmore or WR Kendall Wright all fill other needs at pick #22 and at least one should be available while David Wilson and Lamar Miller should still be available at #37 if they go for Claiborne or Justin Blackmon at #4. Ryan Tannehill and Brandon Weeden are dark horses throughout.
First Pick: #4 Best Fit: Trent Richardson/Kendall Wright Current Prediction: Trent Richardson/Cordy Glenn
TAMPA BAY - It’s Wonderlic Gate and could be coming to Tampa. Morris Claiborne’s college coach is now with the Bucs and the last of the ‘elite’ rated players should come off the board here. Leaves linebacker needs for future rounds, Lavonte David or Bobby Wagner would fill the 2nd or Sean Spence in the 3rd. Don’t right off Trent Richardson if he falls however.
First Pick: #5 Best Fit: Morris Claiborne Current Prediction: Morris Claiborne
ST LOUIS - Beneficiary of a trade with Washington and have the picks to finally fill some big holes. Would love Matt Kalil to fall but highly unlikely to happen. Not a bad second prize in Blackmon, could score LT Mike Adams along with DT Kendall Reyes or Devon Still in the 2nd round with 4-3 OLB’s Lavonte David or Zach Brown alternatives.
First Pick: #6 Best Fit: Matt Kalil Current Prediction: Justin Blackmon
JACKSONVILLE - New coach/owner combinations seem to bring out the most unpredictable of first round selections. Therefore I wouldn’t discount Tannehill here although WR Michael Floyd could be seen as enough of a playmaker and won’t cancel out last year’s investment in Blaine Gabbert. DE is their other big need so Quinton Coples and Melvin Ingram are the main possibilities. 2nd round could see Alshon Jeffery get a shot or Vinny Curry at DE if Floyd goes in the first.
First Pick: #7 Best Fit: Melvin Ingram Current Prediction: Melvin Ingram
MIAMI - Needed a QB that could start right away but instead will likely settle for one that is developmental. Have a glaring need at DE and Ingram or Coples would probably be a smarter pick. 2nd round Zebrie Sanders could plug right tackle but will need a really deep draft to fill all their holes.
First Pick: #8 Best Fit: Melvin Ingram Current Prediction: Ryan Tannehill
CAROLINA - If Ingram falls they’ll take him but otherwise expect them to stick to their primary need in DT. They can look for a WR in the middle rounds with guys like Marvin McNutt, Nick Toon and Joe Adams likely to be available. Guard is also a need but will it be enough to take one of the cleaner prospect’s in David DeCastro? A trade down could also be possible with teams looking at Luke Kuechly.
First Pick: #9 Best Fit: Fletcher Cox Current Prediction: Fletcher Cox
BUFFALO - With the pass rush need filled in free agency the Bills turn to left tackle as one of only a few primary needs left. Thus, this leaves multiple options for them to go here and BPA or a trade down are very much on the cards. Philadelphia may want to jump over Kansas City to fill their major need in LB and grab Luke Kuechly. If the Bills can’t/won’t make the trade they may not like the OT’s enough either and instead go for a playmaker in Michael Floyd or Dre Kirkpatrick. In the 2nd round they look to linebacker and Bobby Wagner or left tackle Bobby Massie and CB Trumaine Johnson in the 3rd.
First Pick: #10 Best Fit: Michael Floyd Current Prediction: Michael Floyd
KANSAS CITY - May reach for NT Dontari Poe but if not convinced he can be a true zero technique nose tackle then instead go for BPA and a position of need in Kuechly. With guard also a need DeCastro is another solid option. 2nd round Amini Silatolu or Kevin Zeitler are good options there while NT’s Josh Chapman, Mike Martin or Alameda Ta’amu may be reaches they need to take in either the 2nd or 3rd.
First Pick: #11 Best Fit: Luke Kuechly Current Prediction: Luke Kuechly
SEATTLE - They want Floyd but would probably have to trade up to get him. Tannehill is another potential Carroll favourite that they’d like to fall while OLB and DE are their biggest needs and Quinton Coples is definitely rated high enough to go here.
First Pick: #12 Best Fit: Michael Floyd Current Prediction: Quinton Coples
ARIZONA - They need help across the O-Line but even more so at linebacker and corner. So they can’t really miss in the first round with players like Kuechly, DeCastro, Riley Reiff and Kirkpatrick all rated around #13. They don’t pick again until round 3 however so they will have to think carefully. CB Casey Hayward is our prediction for round 3.
First Pick: #13 Best Fit: Luke Kuechly Current Prediction: Riley Reiff
DALLAS - Major needs at pass rush and in the secondary this is a veritable gold mine. CB choices include Stephon Gilmore, Kirkpatrick and Janoris Jenkins while Mark Barron is a big candidate at Safety. Courtney Upshaw or Whitney Mercilus are the most obvious 3-4 OLB’s but if they wait until round 2 they could also look at a Vinny Curry or Bruce Irvin.
First Pick: #14 Best Fit: Mark Barron Current Prediction: Stephon Gilmore
PHILADELPHIA - They are very likely to either trade up or down as their needs don’t match up well to pick #15. If they can jump into #9 or #10 and grab Kuechly that seems an obvious fit however DT has become more of a need and Michael Brockers if stuck here or Jerel Worthy if they go into the twenties are options. Second round they have two picks near one another and will look for defensive depth or O-Line help. DE Chandler Jones could be a great pickup while G Silatolu would also be on their radar.
First Pick: #15 Best Fit: Michael Brockers Current Prediction: Trade with Houston and Donte Hightower at #26.
NEW YORK JETS - Generally go BPA so look to who falls. Have needs at pass rush, Upshaw and Mercilus come into the mix. 2nd or 3rd round may yield a running back, potentially David Wilson is the man most likely. Secondary help or a NT are definite possibilities as the draft goes into day 3.
First Pick: #16 Best Fit: Courtney Upshaw Current Prediction: David DeCastro
CINCINNATI - They have two first rounders and badly need a cornerback so definitely should fill here. Barron could be another option while a luxury pick in Stephen Hill cannot be discounted. They will also look to a Lamar Miller to backup Cedric Benson at running back in the 2nd round.
First Pick: #17 Best Fit: Stephon Gilmore/Stephen Hill Current Prediction: Dre Kirkpatrick/Stephen Hill
SAN DIEGO - Need O-Line help but can’t seem them getting away from pass rush needs particularly with late first round depth in the position. 2nd round they will need to look at improving their secondary, Jayron Hosley or Josh Robinson are possibilities.
First Pick: #18 Best Fit: Whitney Mercilus Current Prediction: Whitney Mercilus
CHICAGO - Another team that surely upgrades the O-Line with Mike Tice taking over as Offensive Co-ordinator and Brandon Marshall fixing their WR problems. However if they don’t like Jonathan Martin as a left tackle they may prefer to go WR or TE instead. They would also like a high to mid round running back and Greg Childs is a sleeper project in the 3rd.
First Pick: #19 Best Fit: Jonathan Martin Current Prediction: Kendall Wright
TENNESSEE - It seems that no matter which way you cut it, the Titans do really well with this pick. DT class is deep but only a few teams have a need ahead of them. Therefore they should get good value at #20. Is center Ben Jones good enough value in the 2nd or does someone like Dwight Bentley or Trumaine Johnson get a look in? WR Chris Givens is yet another alternative.
First Pick: #20 Best Fit: Michael Brockers Current Prediction: Michael Brockers
DETROIT - The most unpredictable team in the draft. Seem to be very high on tight-ends despite having 2 decent ones. Should look to O-Line and secondary but just as likely to avoid. They also may have to go back to the well at running back in the early rounds - Isaiah Pead may fit their style? James Brown is also a big possibility to end up a Lion.
First Pick: #23 Best Fit: Jonathan Martin Current Prediction: Coby Fleener
PITTSBURGH - Another strictly BPA team but this year have more needs than usual so will this alter their approach? If they wanted to trade up they would be a team interested in Dontari Poe. Donte Hightower is another good choice here while the O-Line should be replenished in later rounds. Is Mychal Kendricks an option for them?
First Pick: #24 Best Fit: Mark Barron Current Prediction: Mark Barron
DENVER - Seem to have more needs by the day, despite getting to the playoffs last year and gaining Peyton Manning in the off-season there are requirements across the D-Line, interior O-Line, linebacking corps, WR and RB. Will they take a chance on Doug Martin in the 1st? Strong options at DL could change that. Rueben Randle would be a great pick up for them in the 2nd but they may need to trade up to get him.
First Pick: #25 Best Fit: Jerel Worthy Current Prediction: Shea McClellin
HOUSTON - Mike Adams or a trade up for Dontari Poe seem the most logical here but any linebacker help will also be appreciated. Some like Stephen Hill to go here to give Andre Johnson a true number #2. Will Wade Phillips take a chance to mold CB Josh Robinson in the 2nd?
First Pick: #26 Best Fit: Jonathan Martin Current Prediction: Trade with Philadelphia Dontari Poe (15)
NEW ENGLAND - Have two first rounders yet again and will probably dish one to get more picks next year. However the needs are there this year to keep all 4 of their picks in the first 2 rounds. Would Patriot fans be happy with Jerel Worthy, Peter Konz, Harrison Smith and Chris Polk?
First Pick: #27 Best Fit: Mark Barron/Peter Konz Current Prediction: Jerel Worthy/Peter Konz(31)
GREEN BAY - If pass rushers really do fall away (which is not very likely) then this is a gold mine for Green Bay. All their needs are on the defensive side of the ball. Expect them to be looking closely at free safety George Iloka in the 2nd or even 3rd. Meanwhile Nick Perry, Courtney Upshaw, Shea McClellin or Chandler Jones are all possibilities here.
First Pick: #28 Best Fit: Courtney Upshaw Current Prediction: Courtney Upshaw
BALTIMORE - Like to go BPA and do have needs across the O-Line front. Could they trade back for Peter Konz or would they be worried the Pats would get him? If they like Mike Adams he is a possibility. May like a receiver somewhere in the top 4 rounds also.
First Pick: #29 Best Fit: Donte Hightower Current Prediction: Jonathan Martin
SAN FRANCISCO - Have few needs, almost exclusively across the O-Line but also at Free Safety, Defensive End and Outside Linebacker. Should be able to take a luxury pick here and may want another receiver. Could they take a chance on Brandon Weeden?
First Pick: #30 Best Fit: Kendall Reyes Current Prediction: Rueben Randle
NEW YORK GIANTS - Won the superbowl but lost depth and WR and RB and still need a ROT and SS. Don’t mind reaching. 2nd round special is OT Mitchell Schwartz. SS Antonio Allen could be picked up later in the draft as could WR T.Y. Hilton to replace Mario Manningham.
First Pick: #32 Best Fit: Lavonte David Current Prediction: Doug Martin
ATLANTA - No first round pick and have to replace Tony Gonzalez as well as pressing need at LT. If Bobby Massie falls would be great but highly unlikely. May be able to hold off until Round 3 and grab Orson Charles whose stock has dropped after a bad combine/pro-day. BPA might be a smarter solution in Round 2.
First Pick: #55 Best Fit: Bobby Massie Current Prediction: Vinny Curry
NEW ORLEANS - Gave up their first and lost their second. Lucky the Saints have a good history in recent drafts. They will need all their scouting talent this year. Have plenty of needs so good players will be a priority. Look for 2nd round talent guys who fall to the mid rounds thanks to injuries or being from smaller schools. Chase Minnifield, Brandon Washington, Joe Adams, Nate Potter, Jonathan Massaquoi, Aaron Henry and Dwight Jones are all possibilities.
First Pick: #90 Best Fit: Demario Davis Current Prediction: Trade with Cincinnati to #84 Tyrone Crawford
OAKLAND - Oakland are always a fun team to have in the draft due to their prevalence for picking players with good measurables over performance. This year however they only show up on the first 2 days thanks to a compensatory pick. Lucky they’ve filled most holes in free agency however there is enough to keep them busy on day 3. DT, DB’s, TE and O-Line are the major targets for them.
First Pick: #96 Best Fit: Orson Charles Current Prediction: Brandon Washington

INDIANAPOLIS - The Colts have a host of needs which, in any other year, may entice them to trade away their number #1 overall to get more picks.

Thus, this leaves multiple options for them to go here and BPA or a trade down are very much on the cards. Philadelphia may want to jump over Kansas City to fill their major need in LB and grab Luke Kuechly.
