Take a look at our mock draft for this week as of the Conference Championship Games.
#1 - Indianapolis, Andrew Luck QB, Stanford (underclassman)
Needs: CB, OT, DT - BPA vs Need Quotient=5.7
Breaking news has Andrew Luck going to the Colts, wow. Not really so breaking, owner Jim Irsay says he is taking Luck, they may trade him or the pick if Manning is healthy but otherwise Luck remains the number 1 draft choice for 2012.
#2 - St Louis, Matt Kalil-Offensive Tackle, USC (underclassman)
Needs: CB, OLB, DT, OT - BNQ=4.5
Some people think the Rams will draft Justin Blackmon but the need at tackle is just so great we can’t see them passing up Kalil for anybody (unless a super trade occurs). With Barkley returning to USC, Kalil is the undisputed number 2 on the board and will be just what St Louis need to help QB Sam Bradford stay upright.
#3 Minnesota, Justin Blackmon-Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State
Needs: WR, DB, OL - BNQ=2.7
Minnesota like to take their guy as evidenced with the shock pick of Christian Ponder at #12 overall last year. Now they can go get Ponder some help with Blackmon who should be there unless the Rams pass up their tackle need for a receiver. If so Kalil becomes the likely pick here or CB Morris Claiborne, another Viking need.
#4 Miami, TRADE with Cleveland, Robert Griffin III-Quarterback, Baylor (underclassman)
Needs: QB, DT, ILB, OL - BNQ=3.4
We’ve had Miami missing on RGIII and taking WR Michael Floyd instead but Griffin may be too tempting to pass up and a trade with Cleveland at the right price is now a more likely scenario.
#5 - Tampa Bay, Morris Claiborne-Cornerback, LSU (underclassman)
Needs: OLB, ILB, CB - BNQ=5.4
Expect the Bucs to take BPA which would be a choice between Riley Reiff and Morris Claiborne. Cornerback is the bigger need so Claiborne gets the nod. If Griffin happened to still be on the board at this point he could be a surprise choice with a new coach in Tampa.
#6 Washington, Trent Richardson-Halfback, Alabama (underclassman)
Needs: QB, WR, ILB - BNQ=5.8
Shanahan hasn’t shown much propensity for running the ball after Tim Hightower went down but may covet Richardson so much he goes back there despite the cries to improve the passing side of his game with either a QB or WR. It is likely between Ryan Tannehill and the very impressive Richardson at this point.
#7 Jacksonville, Michael Floyd-Wide Receiver, Notre Dame
Needs: WR, DE, CB - BNQ=5.5
Jacksonville will want to add a skill position with a new owner and coach in charge and Floyd could be the help new QB Blaine Gabbert needs. Alternative surprise choice could be Alshon Jeffery who has off-field issues but a bigger upside.
#8 Cleveland (from Miami), Riley Reiff-Offensive Tackle, Iowa (underclassman)
Needs: RB, ROT, WR - BNQ=4.0
We had Reiff here at #4 but the trade still leaves Mike Holmgren with his man. Holgrem has not been tempted by the flashy choices since taking over at Cleveland and will probably shun the skill positions just now but he has another 1st round pick and 2 seconds to fill that requirement later.
#9 - Carolina, Devon Still-Defensive Tackle/End, Penn State
Needs: WR, DT, ILB - BNQ=4.0
Devon Still is really climbing the draft boards and the flexible DT in a 4-3 or DE in a 3-4 would be a good addition for the Panthers as they may be changing their defense this year or running more hybrids.
#10 - Buffalo, Ryan Tannehill-Quarterback, Texas A&M
Needs: OLB, CB, LT - BNQ=4.9
Courtney Upshaw or Dre Kirkpatrick would be the more obvious choices here but Tannehill may be too good a prospect to pass up for the Bills who have stated on numerous occasions over the past 2 seasons that they will take a QB they like if they are there.
#11 Kansas City, Jonathan Martin-Offensive Tackle, Stanford (underclassman)
Needs: OT, CB, ILB = BNQ=3.9
Jonathan Martin is one of the top players on the board in a position of most need for the Chiefs.
#12 Seattle, Courtney Upshaw-Outside Linebacker, Alabama
Needs: QB, PR, CB - BNQ=4.5
Seattle need a QB but will hold off for now and take Upshaw who also fills a primary need.
#13 - Arizona, David DeCastro-Offensive Guard, Stanford (underclassman)
Needs: LOT, OL, LB, DB - BNQ=5.4
Arizona like to take a value pick at a position of need. Offensive Linemen are needed in multiple positions and DeCastro’s top ten ranking makes this an easy choice.
#14 – Dallas, Nick Perry-Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, USC
Needs: FS, OLB, DE, CB - BNQ=4.0
They wanted Upshaw but Perry is a pretty decent 2nd place for the Cowboys as they aim to put more pressure on the opposing QB.
#15 - Philadephia, Donta’ Hightower-Inside Linebacker, Alabama (underclassman)
Needs: ILB, OT, OLB - BNQ=4.1
Hightower has size and presence and could play either inside or out, Philadelphia need all of the above, a pretty easy choice.
#16 – NY Jets, Dre Kirkpatrick-Cornerback, Alabama (underclassman)
Needs: OLB, DB, OL - BNQ=6.3
The Jets like to go BPA, Kirkpatrick has some off-field issues but if the Jets are happy with those outcomes then they get a top ten pick at #16 in a position of need.
#17 - Cincinnati (from Oakland), Alfonzo Dennard-Cornerback, Nebraska
Needs: CB, RB, OLB - BNQ=5.3
The Bengals have a few needs but with another first round pick shortly they go for the top corner left on the board in Dennard.
#18 - San Diego, Luke Kuechly-Inside Linebacker, Boston College (underclassman)
Needs: ROT, ILB, OLB - BNQ=3.7
The Chargers keep coach Norv Turner and GM A.J. Smith and draft need. Kuechly will be a huge upgrade to the weak linebacking corps in San Diego.
#19 - Chicago, Mohamed Sanu-Wide Receiver, Rutgers (underclassman)
Needs: WR, OL, TE - BNQ=5.0
The Bears recent draft system is relatively unknown and GM Jerry Angelo has already been fired. We wondered if Matt Forte would be let go but if he returns then Sanu could be the option as the Bears desperately need help at receiver.
#20 - Tennessee, Melvin Ingram-Defensive End, South Carolina
Needs: DE, WR, DB - BNQ=4.4
The Titans would be happy to upgrade their front 4 at this late stage with a fringe top 10 talent in Ingram.
#21 - Cincinnati, Lamar Miller-Running Back, Miami
The Bengals go need twice in five picks and have their long-term replacement for Cedric Benson.
#22 Cleveland (from Atlanta), Alshon Jeffrey-Wide Receiver, Notre Dame
Jeffrey is a bit of a risk but the Browns have a plan to upgrade across a number of positions this draft and may even conduct a trade to get more picks but look for them to target Jeffrey to give Colt McCoy a viable number 1 target.
#23 - Detroit, Kendall Wright-Wide Receiver/Kick Returner, Baylor
Needs: OG, OT, CB - BNQ=4.5
You never quite know which way Detroit will turn come draft day. It would make sense for them to either take a chance on CB Janoris Jenkins or go for Cordy Glenn or Peter Konz on the O-Line. Right now we have them taking Wright but realistically you could throw a dart at the board at this point and be closer to figuring out what the Lions will do.
#24 - Pittsburgh, Cordy Glenn-Offensive Guard, Georgia
Needs: OL, OLB, NT - BNQ=6.7
We’ve had the Steelers taking NT Dontari Poe here but they will trend towards BPA and Glenn may be high enough on the board for them to take here unless they think Coples will fit in a 3-4.
#25 Denver, Quinton Coples-Defensive End, North Carolina
Needs: CB, OT, DL, WR - BNQ=7.5
Coples is dropping the draft boards but Denver have a need on the D-Line and will address offensive needs next round.
#26 - Houston, Dontari Poe, Defensive Tackle, Memphis
Needs: OL, DL, DB - BNQ=4.0
Houston’s defense looks great under Wade Phillips but they want a man mountain in the middle to complete the set. Poe is their man.
#27 - New England (from New Orleans), Peter Konz-Offensive Center, Wisconsin (underclassman)
Needs: OC, DB, DT - BNQ=4.7
The Pats need a center so this is an easy choice.
#28 - Green Bay, Billy Wynn-Defensive End/Defensive Tackle, Boise State
Needs: OLB, S, ILB - BNQ=5.0
Billy Wynn will play DE in the Packers 3-4 and try to improve Green Bay’s pass rush. Other options are Jerel Worthy, Janoris Jenkins, Zach Brown or Mark Barron.
#29 – San Francisco, Jerel Worthy-Defensive Tackle, Michigan State (underclassman)
Needs: CB, WR, OL - BNQ=3.5
WR is a bigger need but Worthy will just make the 49ers defense even tougher.
#30 - New England, Janoris Jenkins-Cornerback, North Alabama
Someone will take a chance on Jenkins to overcome off-field issues, and it may occur here if not before. Otherwise Jayron Hosley and Chase Minnifield are the other men at CB if Jenkins is considered too big a risk or a trade as the Pats like that sort of thing.
#31 - NY Giants, Zebrie Sanders-Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma State
Needs: OL, LB, RB - BNQ=3.0
Giants need help on the O-Line quite severely especially at right tackle, expect a need pick here as that is what history tells us with the Giants and the first round.
#32 - Baltimore, Vontaze Burfict-Inside Linebacker, Arizona State
Needs: LOT, LB, DB - BNQ=6.2
Like Jenkins, Burfict has some issues but expect the Ravens to bring him into their system to become the next Ray Lewis, especially if Lewis retires which he may do if he gets that 2nd ring.
