Mock Draft 2012 1st Round (Week 17 edition)

Take a look at our mock draft for this week based upon the revised standings posted the day before.

#1 - Indianapolis, Andrew Luck QB, Stanford (underclassman)
Needs: CB, OT, DT - BPA vs Need Quotient=5.7
Still got Andrew Luck out of Stanford going here despite it being a secondary need for the Colts. They do need Offensive Line help and Matt Kalil could be an option but realistically the Colts won’t pass up Luck unless it is via a trade. The only question left is whether Manning will be dealt and how will that affect the draft order if he does?

#2 - St Louis, Matt Kalil-Offensive Tackle, USC (underclassman)
Needs: CB, OLB, DT, OT - BNQ=4.5
The Rams will draft the best player at a position of need. They also need help in lots of areas including cornerback and wide receiver where Morris Claiborne and Justin Blackmon will come under consideration however Kalil is now the undisputed number 2 on the board and will be just what St Louis need to help QB Sam Bradford stay upright.

#3 - Tampa Bay, Morris Claiborne-Cornerback, LSU (underclassman)
Needs: OLB, ILB, CB - BNQ=5.4
Expect the Bucs to take BPA which would be a choice between Robert Griffin III and Morris Claiborne. We are guessing that Tampa stick with Josh Freeman but at this point anything is possible.

#4 Cleveland, Riley Reiff-Offensive Tackle, Iowa (underclassman)
Needs: RB, ROT, WR - BNQ=4.0
Holmgren has not been tempted by the flashy choices since taking over at Cleveland and will probably shun the skill positions for either more draft picks with a trade or a right tackle. We are still thinking Trent Richardson may go here especially if Peyton Hillis isn’t kept but right now safe is the option in Reiff.

#5 Minnesota, Justin Blackmon-Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State
Needs: WR, DB, OL - BNQ=2.7
Minnesota like to take their guy as evidenced with the shock pick of Christian Ponder at #12 overall last year. Now they can go get Ponder some help with Blackmon who also happens to be the best player on the board, seems like a nice match.

#6 Washington, Trent Richardson-Halfback, Alabama (underclassman)
Needs: QB, WR, ILB - BNQ=5.8
Shanahan hasn’t shown much propensity for running the ball after Tim Hightower went down but may covet Richardson so much he goes back there despite the cries to improve the passing side of his game with either a QB or WR. If the Redskins have RGIII on their board they will take him without blinking but if not it is likely between Ryan Tannehill and the very impressive Richardson at this point.

#7 Jacksonville, Robert Griffin III-Quarterback, Baylor (underclassman)
Needs: WR, DE, CB - BNQ=5.5
Since 2008 new owners have drafted skill positions 2/3’s of the time while new coach’s are also over 60%. With the Jaguars in both of these camps what bet they shun last year’s pick in Gabbert and go for their own choice with the Heisman trophy winner in RGIII?

#8 Miami, Michael Floyd-Wide Receiver, Notre Dame
Needs: QB, DT, ILB - BNQ=3.4
QB Matt Moore has been impressive since taking over for Chad Henne mid-year but the Dolphins were keen on RGIII until the Jags jumped in. With Landry Jones or Ryan Tannehill still available there are options for Miami but expect them to instead land Floyd as they feel a big time player at receiver could take the pressure off Brandon Marshall or allow them to use Marshall as trade bait for more picks later in the draft.

#9 - Carolina, Devon Still-Defensive Tackle/End, Penn State
Needs: WR, DT, ILB - BNQ=4.0
Not sure Still will go this high but his draft stock has been rising lately and Carolina need help at the D-Line, especially if they move to a 3-4. Still upgrades either at DT in a 4-3 or DE in a 3-4.

#10 - Buffalo, Quinton Coples-Defensive End, North Carolina
Needs: OLB, CB, LT - BNQ=4.9
The Bills need help at pass rush and while OLB is where they would like to fill the hole there isn’t anyone that fits their prototype while Coples does at DE and would make for a formidable front 3 with Kyle Williams and Marcel Dareus. CB Dre Kirkpatrick is another direction the Bills could take with this pick.

#11 Kansas City, Ryan Tannehill-Quarterback, Texas A&M
Needs: OT, CB, ILB = BNQ=3.9
With a new coach there are a number of permutations the Chiefs could take at #11 overall. We expect they may go away from their more obvious needs for a skill position as they have already stated they want more consistency at quarterback and take a chance on Ryan Tannehill to give it to them.

#12 Seattle, Landry Jones-Quarterback, Oklahoma (underclassman)
Needs: QB, PR, CB - BNQ=4.5
Seattle make a bold move and pick up the guy Pete Carroll covets in Jones, the pressure is now on Carroll to make it work.

#13 - San Diego, Jonathan Martin-Offensive Tackle, Stanford (underclassman)
Needs: ROT, ILB, OLB - BNQ=3.7
If the Chargers get rid of coach Norv Turner which we here at www.mocknfldrafts.blogspot.com suspect they might then the possibilities open up but in the meantime expect the Chargers to draft need and Martin is the best player at one of those positions.

#14 - Chicago, Kendall Wright-Wide Receiver/Kick Returner, Baylor
Needs: WR, OL, TE - BNQ=5.0
The Bears recent draft system is relatively unknown and the chance that Lovie Smith is still there by April is also slim. So with a new coach we think they will go for the position most (or second most) in need in WR. O Line will still needs to be addressed. Alshon Jeffrey is another option.

#15 - Arizona, David DeCastro-Offensive Guard, Stanford (underclassman)
Needs: LOT, OL, LB, DB - BNQ=5.4
Arizona like to take a value pick at a position of need. OT is the obvious position for them and with three tackles already taken in this mock expect that they may try and trade up for one of them, if not David DeCastro is an excellent choice to also fill a need at guard.

#16 – Dallas, Courtney Upshaw-Outside Linebacker, Alabama
Needs: FS, OLB, DE, CB - BNQ=4.0
Melvin Ingram may be more likely to go here but the Cowboys are craving someone coming from the edge and decide to take a slight chance on Upshaw who is sliding on some draft boards but may climb back by April as the pass rush is coveted by many.

#17 - Philadephia, Luke Kuechly-Inside Linebacker, Boston College (underclassman)
Needs: ILB, OT, OLB - BNQ=4.1
Philly wisely go for need here as it is also a guy that is near the top of most draft boards at this point.

#18 - Tennessee, Nick Perry-Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, USC
Needs: DE, WR, DB - BNQ=4.4
There are a host of options for the Titans in their position of most need and even one really good one at DB in Dre Kirkpatrick. Nick Perry is a nice mix of speed and size that has Tennessee choosing him just over Melvin Ingram.

#19 – NY Jets, Dre Kirkpatrick-Cornerback, Alabama (underclassman)
Needs: OLB, DB, OL - BNQ=6.3
The Jets need a pass rush and there are a few good players available that will help including Melvin Ingram and Zach Brown but the Jets are one of a few teams that trend towards BPA and Kirkpatrick is clearly that and will also help a New York secondary that has been surprisingly leaky this year.

#20 - Cincinnati, Melvin Ingram-Defensive End, South Carolina
Needs: CB, RB, OLB - BNQ=5.3
The Bengals wants to upgrade their pass rush and decide Ingram is too good to pass up over Zach Brown. If Kirkpatrick wasn’t just taken he was the pick here.

#21 - NY Giants, Mike Adams-Offensive Tackle, Ohio State
Needs: OL, LB, RB - BNQ=3.0
Giants need help on the O-Line quite severely especially at right tackle. If they replace Coughlin then the new coach might go for RB or WR but if not expect a need pick here as that is what history tells us with the Giants and the first round. Mike Adams is a work in progress but New York will be happy to reach if they believe in their man.

#22 - Houston, Jerel Worthy-Defensive Tackle, Michigan State (underclassman)
Needs: OL, DL, DB - BNQ=4.0
Houston need to get bigger across their defensive front and Worthy will help them do that, there are other good prospects in positions of need in Cordy Glenn at OG or Alfonso Dennard at CB but Worthy is the more worthy, ahem.

#23 - TRADE Cincinnati (from Atlanta through Cleveland), Alfonzo Dennard-Cornerback, Nebraska
Cincinnati jump two spots to ensure they fill their need at CB.

#24 - Pittsburgh, Cordy Glenn-Offensive Guard, Georgia
Needs: OL, OLB, NT - BNQ=6.7
Pittsburgh will take BPA, it is just a matter of who it is. Fletcher Cox is the highest rated player left on our board but we go to number #2 in Glenn as Cox doesn’t quite fit the 3-4 and it just so happens Glenn also fills a need

#25 Cleveland (from Oakland through Cincinnati), Alshon Jeffrey-Wide Receiver, Notre Dame
Jeffrey is a bit of a risk but the Browns have a plan to upgrade across a number of positions this draft and may even conduct a 2nd trade to get more picks but look for them to target Jeffrey to give Colt McCoy a viable number 1 target.

#26 Denver, Fletcher Cox-Defensive End/Defensive Tackle, Mississippi State
Needs: CB, OT, DL, WR - BNQ=7.5
Hard to think that the Broncos will take a chance on CB Janoris Jenkins nor reach for Chase Minnifield, instead John Fox takes BPA in Fletcher Cox which has the added bonus of shoring up their defensive line.

#27 - Detroit, Lamar Miller-Running Back, Miami
Needs: OG, OT, CB - BNQ=4.5
You never quite know which way Detroit will turn come draft day. It would make sense for them to either take a chance on CB Janoris Jenkins or perhaps look at their Offensive Line which could do with a Zebrie Sanders or Brandon Washington. Still, with the running back woes Lamar Miller comes into the picture and beats out TE Dwayne Allen who the Lions were also eyeing off.

#28 – San Francisco, Janoris Jenkins-Cornerback, North Alabama
Needs: CB, WR, OL - BNQ=3.5
The Niners will either take a chance on Jenkins to overcome off-field issues at corner or look at either Rueben Randle or Nick Toon at receiver. Jayron Hosley and Chase Minnifield are the other men at CB if Jenkins is considered too big a risk.

#29 - New England, Peter Konz-Offensive Center, Wisconsin (underclassman)
The Pats need a center so this is an easy choice for a guy that is clearly first round material.

#30 - TRADE Houston (from New Orleans through New England), Dontari Poe, Defensive Tackle, Memphis
A few weeks ago we had this pick quoted as “from out of nowhere” but the Texans need a big NT and Poe is someone they like who they may make a move for, and we all know the Patriots should be willing to assist for more draft picks.

#31 - Baltimore, Dwayne Allen-Tight End, Clemson
Needs: LOT, TE, DB - BNQ=6.2
Dont’a Hightower is on the board here and could be a long-term answer to Ray Lewis but we say the Ravens look to address that issue in a more subtle fashion than a first round draft choice and instead go for need in Allen who is high enough on the board to be considered by a team that traditionally does not reach under any circumstances.

#32 - Green Bay, Donta’ Hightower-Inside Linebacker, Alabama (underclassman)
Needs: OLB, S, ILB - BNQ=5.0
Two superbowl rings and they keep on producing on draft day. Hightower can play either inside or out and is the perfect fit for a team that needs help across their linebacker corps.
