Mock Draft 2012 1st Round (Post Combine edition)

#1 - Indianapolis, Andrew Luck QB, Stanford (underclassman)
Needs: CB, DT, OT, QB - BPA vs Need Quotient=5.7
Andrew Luck, No #1. With Manning gone it is officially official.

#2 - St Louis, TRADE with Miami, Robert Griffin III-Quarterback, Baylor
Needs: ROT, DE, OL, TE, FS - BNQ=3.4
The rumours are rife that someone will deal with Jeff Fisher and St Louis for a host of draft picks to ensure RGIII heads their way. We like Miami to make a play but Washington, Kansas City and Seattle are also in the mix.

#3 Minnesota, Morris Claiborne-Cornerback, LSU (underclassman)
Needs: CB, DB, DT, LOT, WR - BNQ=2.7
Minnesota reached last year to get Ponder and may go back to the well for Justin Blackmon or look to Matt Kalil for protection. Right now we still have them taking Claiborne but don't be surprised if that changes in the upcoming weeks.

#4 Cleveland, Matt Kalil-Offensive Tackle, USC (underclassman)
Needs: QB, ROT, RB, WR, DB - BNQ=4.0
They may like Trent Richardson or Justin Blackmon but at this stage we will predict Holmgren makes the safe bet in Kalil. If RGIII fell to them they may take that chance also but don’t expect them to trade up for him.

#5 - Tampa Bay, Trent Richardson-Halfback, Alabama (underclassman)
Needs: OLB, ILB, CB, RB, OL - BNQ=5.4
Expect the Bucs to try and trade out of this pick as their needs aren’t matched up right but Trent Richardson could give their new coach Greg Schiano a gamebreaker.

#6 Washington, Justin Blackmon-Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State
Needs: QB, WR, CB, ROT, RB - BNQ=5.8
Shanahan will need to make a decision on whether he will stick with Grossman, take a chance that somebody he likes falls to the second or third round or take Ryan Tannehill. We believe it remains a viable option for Washington to wait and take a top flight receiver instead in Blackmon.

#7 Jacksonville, Michael Floyd-Wide Receiver, Notre Dame
Needs: WR, CB, DE, OL, TE - BNQ=5.5
Floyd has a lot of ability and the Jags will be hoping someone can make QB Blaine Gabbert look a lot better than he did last year.

#8/#9 St Louis (from Miami), Riley Reiff-Offensive Tackle, Iowa (underclassman)
Needs: CB, OLB, DT, LOT, WR - BNQ=4.5
The Rams have plenty of needs but Reiff just might match up best, besides Mike Mayock has him as the number one Offensive Tackle prospect so what’s not to like?

#9/#8 - Carolina, Michael Brockers-Defensive Tackle, LSU
Needs: WR, DT, OG, ILB, DB - BNQ=4.0
This pick will depend largely on what defense the Panthers go with this year but the Sophomore out of LSU has really impressed people both on and off the field and looks a solid top ten pick.

#10 - Buffalo, Quinton Coples-Defensive End, North Carolina
Needs: DE, CB, WR, LOT - BNQ=4.9
A lot of people down Buffalo way desperately want the Bills to draft a Quarterback to compete or be groomed with Ryan Fitzpatrick but if the top 3 prospects are already off the board at #10 it leaves the four biggest needs to choose from. Jonathan Martin is probably the best choice of those however Buddy Nix has shown no propensity to draft Offensive Tackles in the early rounds which leaves Coples to add a pass rush threat to the Bills new 4-3 front.

#11/#12 Kansas City, Dontari Poe-Nose Tackle, Memphis
Needs: OT, NT, ILB, QB, CB = BNQ=3.9
The Chiefs have a few needs and Jonathan Martin, Luke Kuechly or Ryan Tannehill all fit here but Dontari Poe is becoming the sensation of the draft and with Nose Tackle one of the hardest positions to fill in the NFL the Chiefs may make their move in such a direction.

#12/#11 Seattle, Brock Osweiler-Quarterback, Arizona State
Needs: QB, PR, OLB, DE, DT - BNQ=4.5
The Seahawks are sweating on which QB’s will be available. Osweiler may’ve lasted to the second round but they aren’t taking any chances. The injured Tannehill remains out there.

#13 - Arizona, Jonathan Martin-Offensive Tackle, Stanford (underclassman)
Needs: LOT, OL, LB, CB, DB - BNQ=5.4
Arizona like to take a value pick at a position of need. Jonathan Martin is one of the top players on the board and will slot straight in at left tackle.

#14 – Dallas, Melvin Ingram-Defensive End, South Carolina
Needs: CB, OLB, DE, DB, OL - BNQ=4.0
Melvin Ingram as pressed his claims as a top ten pick. If the Cowboys can have him at #14 they will be forced to take him to improve their pass rush.

#15 - Philadephia, Luke Kuechly-Inside Linebacker, Boston College (underclassman)
Needs: ILB, OLB, OL, SS, WR - BNQ=4.1
David DeCastro is very tempting at this point but the Eagles took guard Danny Watkins in the first round last year and this year instead turn to Luke Kuechly to upgrade their linebacking corps.

#16 – NY Jets, Ryan Tannehill-Quarterback, Texas A&M
Needs: OLB, S, OL, CB - BNQ=6.3
The Jets have been in the news all off-season and taking Tannehill here just spices things up even more in the Big Apple.

#17 - Cincinnati (from Oakland), David DeCastro-Offensive Guard, Stanford (underclassman)
Needs: CB, S, OG, OLB, RB - BNQ=5.3
DeCastro is the top rated player right now and as Cincy have a need at guard this pick makes too much sense to ignore. Expect cornerbacks Jenkins or Kirkpatrick to go with the Bengals next pick coming up.

#18 - San Diego, Courtney Upshaw-Outside Linebacker/Defensive End, Alabama
Needs: ROT, ILB, OLB, CB, OL - BNQ=3.7
This guy has plenty of motor and may finally be a replacement for Shawne Merriman.

#19 - Chicago, Rueben Randle-Wide Receiver, LSU
Needs: WR, OL, DE, DB, TE - BNQ=5.0
The Bears need wide receiver help badly. Randle has a safe pair of hands and will be an immediate number 1 for QB Jay Cutler.

#20 - Tennessee, Devon Still-Defensive Tackle/End, Penn State
Needs: DE, OC, WR, DB, OG - BNQ=4.4
The Titans could go in a few directions so BPA makes most sense here.

#21 - Cincinnati, Janoris Jenkins-Cornerback, North Alabama
Cincy have a need at corner but both Jenkins and Dre Kirkpatrick have off-field issues. Jenkins has all the talent but will the intangibles add up for the Bengals?

#22 Cleveland (from Atlanta), Dre Kirkpatrick-Cornerback/Punt Returner, Alabama (underclassman)
I’m not sure if a team as devoid of talent as the Browns could pass up someone as potentially brilliant as Dre Kirkpatrick. DB is a smaller need but he would be a week 1 starter.

#23 - Detroit, Mike Adams-Offensive Tackle, Ohio State
Needs: OG, OT, CB, OC - BNQ=4.5
Mike Adams is a logical pick for the Lions who need to protect Matthew Stafford, unfortunately logical is not always the way with the Lions on draft day but for now we have them taking Adams.

#24 - Pittsburgh, Donta’ Hightower-Inside Linebacker, Alabama (underclassman)
Needs: ILB, NT, OL, S - BNQ=6.7
Donta’ Hightower meet the Steel Curtain, Steel Curtain meet Donta’ Hightower. We think you will make a perfect pairing.

#25 Denver, Kendall Wright-Wide Receiver/Kick Returner, Baylor
Needs: WR, RB, ILB, OL, CB - BNQ=7.5
Denver are looking for running backs and even a quarterback to back up Tim Tebow but they will fill those positions later. Right now Kendall Wright is as good as any player still on the board and gives Tebow a bit more to throw to.

#26 - Houston, Cordy Glenn-Offensive Guard, Georgia
Needs: OT, NT, OL, DB - BNQ=4.0
They wanted Adams but Glenn is a decent second prize.

#27 - New England (from New Orleans), Peter Konz-Offensive Center, Wisconsin (underclassman)
Needs: OC, DB, DL, OG, WR - BNQ=4.7
The Pats need a center so this the fact that Konz falls to them is a gift.

#28 - Green Bay, Whitney Mercilus-Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, Illinois
Needs: OLB, S, DE - BNQ=5.0
Mercilus would be an immediate upgrade to the Packers pass rush which would automatically upgrade their entire defense.

#29 - Baltimore, Fletcher Cox-Defensive End/Tackle, Mississippi State
Needs: LOT, LB, DB, OL - BNQ=6.2
The Ravens need better protection for Joe Flacco but prefer not to reach for tackle Zebrie Sanders instead settling on Fletcher Cox to play DE in their 3-4.

#30 – San Francisco, Stephen Hill-Wide Receiver, Georgia Tech
Needs: WR, CB, OL, FS - BNQ=3.5
Two weeks ago we had Hill going to the Niners in Round 2. Now we have them taking him in the first round. The way Hill is going he may not even be there for San Fran come April.

#31 - New England, Jerel Worthy-Defensive Tackle, Michigan State (underclassman)
The Pats wanted to take Worthy four picks back but took Konz and hoped that their man would still be there at #31, he was.

#32 - NY Giants, #32 - NY Giants, Kelechi Osemele-Offensive Guard/Tackle, Iowa State
Needs: OT, OL, LB, RB - BNQ=3.0
Giants need help on the O-Line quite severely especially at right tackle, Osemele could cover there or at guard, that’s enough for the champions to make their move.

  1. With Washington acquiring the #2, do you think the rams will draft Blackmon(who they may have been targeting all along)

    1. Very plausible. Reiff was challenging Kalil for top OT prospect but the Combine clearly put Kalil at the top and Reiff's stock slipped a little. If the Rams are happy with the off-field aspect of Blackmon then they will take him in a heartbeat. However don't be surprised if Michael Floyd also goes here.

  2. Doesn't Floyd have off-field issues as well.

    1. You are right. Probably the cleanest WR is one that won't be seen until at least Round 2 in Mohammed Sanu. Rueben Randle and Kendall Wright are ones to watch also. If you see my latest mock I actually have the Rams taking Blackmon.
